The crystal meth abuse in the state of Missouri has become one of the biggest drug threats to the state. The western half of the state is dominated by crystal "ice" methamphetamine, supplied by organizations based out of Mexico, California, and the southwest United States, and transported to the area by vehicles.
The issue of local methamphetamine laboratories remains a top priority with local officials. Law enforcement agencies have seen a resurgence in laboratory seizures since 2006. The state legislation limiting the sale of pseudoephedrine products is believed to have hindered local production throughout the state. However, local laboratory operators continue to bypass the legislation, by using friends and family to obtain the necessary ingredients through "smurfing" (going from store to store, purchasing the maximum allowable amounts), and through theft of ingredients such as anhydrous ammonia.
The state of Missouri has implemented a program called NoMeth.Org. This web site provides a variety of information and resources concerning meth, including the effects of meth use, the dangers associated with meth laboratories, data on meth in Mi ssouri and access to meth-related public service announcements.
One of the things that makes crystal meth so dangerous to this state is the amount of children who are abusing the drug. 2.9% of 9th graders have abused crystal meth at least once in their lives. However, that percentage takes a hue ump by the time these kids reach the 12th grade. 9.7% of 12thg raders have abused crytal meth at least once in their lifetime.
