Geiorgia continues to get most of its crystal meth from the Mexico-U.S. Southwest border area. Because of this and also because of the growing Mexican population, crystal meth has become one of the biggest drug threats to the state of Georgia.
There have been several methamphetamine seizures since 2002. Traditionally, the clandestine laboratory hot spots were in the northwestern counties; however, there have been recent slight shifts in laboratory activity near the extreme southwestern andeastern counties of the state.
One of the ways that officials in Georgia are trying to combat the methamphetamine epidemic is by passing new laws on the sale and purchase of pseudoephedrine (one of the main components to methamphetamine). In 2005, legislation was enacted to restrict the sale of over-the-counter medicine like Sudafed.
Because it is becomeing more difficult for people to buy the ingredients used to make methamphetamine there has been an increase in the availablility of Mexican manufactured crstallized methamphetamine, known as Ice, in the Atlanta metropolitan area.

There were 65 kilograms of methamphetamine seized in the state of Georgia in 2008. During 2008, there were 78 methamphetamine laboratories incidents in Georgia reported by the DEA and the state and local authorities. This is an increase from the 55 meth lab incidents reported in 2007.
During 2008, 26% of the Federally-sentenced defendants in Georgia had committed a drug offense. 13% of those offenders were incarcerated because of a methamphetamine-related charge.
